When we take in an aroma, it immediately activates the hypothalamus.

This is the tiny organ in the brain responsible for regulating dozens of bodily functions, including temperature, thirst, hunger, blood sugar levels, growth, sleeping, waking, sexual arousal, and emotions such as anger and happiness.

Smell sends a message to “the brain’s brain” and from the brain to the entire body.

At the same time, the smell activates the brain’s limbic system, which processes emotions, and an area called the hippocampus—the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory. This is why just a faint whiff of certain smells brings back past memories so vividly.

Follow this three-step process of neuro-associative conditioning to activate your body’s natural healing response.

  1. Identify a scent that you love—one that’s easy to access and balancing for your dosha type. Prepare to use it in the form of a candle, essential oil, sachet, or spice bottle.
  2. Whenever you’re feeling relaxed or at peace, or if you’re having a particularly good day, deeply inhale the essence of the aroma you’ve chosen. Gradually, your body will associate the pleasurable feeling with the aroma.
